The Oorang IndiansThough this team wasn't as serious an endeavor as some of the others, after all, it was mostly created so that business man Walter Lingo could advertise his dogs; the name Oorang being the name of some of the cages he used. It was coached by Jim Thorpe, though at this point he was aging and didnt play all that frequently. Even in his now late 30s, Thorpe still was good however limited and slowed in his age at the time. The team was entirely made up of Native Americans; the roster comprising of some extremely cool names such as: Big Bear (He played both ways and was listed as the Offensive and Defensive Tackle), War Eagle, Arrow Head, Napoleon Barrel, Red Fang, Gray Horse, and more. Jim Thorpe's brother, Jack Thorpe also briefly played for the team. The group got up to a lot off of the field, so much so that at times the football almost came secondary to them. It showed in the team's win loss records, going 3-9 in 1922 and then 2-10 in 1923 before disbanding. The Indians also played in the smallest town to my knowledge that a pro team has ever played in; a tiny, 800 people town named La Rue, Ohio. |
